Microservices & Distributed Computing
Welcome to Data Key Design, Inc., a cutting-edge IT solutions provider founded by Fernando Roldan and Jesus Roldan. With Fernando's extensive 25-year background in information technology and Jesus's dual expertise in film production and IT over the last 12 years, we bring a unique blend of creativity and technical prowess to the forefront of microservices and distributed computing.
Our Journey to Innovation
Our adventure into the realm of microservices and distributed computing was inspired by a complex challenge presented by San Diego State University. Tasked with reverse-engineering an outdated faculty appointment tracking system, we delved deep into the intricacies of modernizing legacy systems for today's demanding academic and enterprise environments. This project not only involved ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements but also reimagining a system that could effectively manage an annual instructional budget of around $90,000,000.
The original system, reliant on flat file databases, was no longer viable. Our solution? A comprehensive architectural plan that could transition seamlessly between Java and Oracle or .NET and SQL Server technologies, emphasizing the universality and flexibility of our approach.
Bridging Technological and Sociological Divides
Our insights from this project grew into a book titled "Programming For Large Umbrella Organizations: From Flat Files, to Relational Databases to MongoDB or Why the Issues Are More Sociological Than Technological". This publication explores the evolution of technology within large organizations, from legacy systems to the cutting edge of microservices and distributed computing. We emphasize that the challenges faced by these organizations are not solely technological but deeply rooted in cultural and sociological factors.
Our Solutions
-
For Single Campus Universities: We developed an open-source system based on our architectural paper for San Diego State University, showcasing how modern object-oriented programming and relational databases can revolutionize educational administration.
-
For Large Umbrella Organizations: We crafted a system capable of supporting the vast operational demands of entities like the California State University System with 23 universities, University of Texas System with 14 institutions, and the University System of Georgia with 35 college and university campuses. This solution leverages open-source technologies to manage high volumes of traffic and complex data integration needs.
-
Microservices for System-Wide Compliance: Our most advanced solution utilizes microservices architecture to ensure seamless compliance with collective bargaining agreements across large-scale umbrella organizations. This non-open-source system demonstrates the power of microservices in automating and managing compliance on an unprecedented scale.
